We’ve been following the activities of DJs in Phuket for some time now. Of course, you have the heavy hitter names such as the lovely Brazilian DJ Claudia Diamond (Tann Terrace and Café Del Mar in Phuket) who we had the pleasure of interviewing in May this year, French born DJ Kay (Sugar in Patong Phuket and BKK) and of course the super famous Thai national DJ Nakadia (International DJ whose played at Ushuaia Ibiza, Amnesia Ibiza, D’Edge Sao Paulo, Cafe D’Anvers in Antwerp Belgium, Watergate, Sisyphos and Tresor in Berlin Germany, De Marktkantine and Westerunie in Amsterdam Netherlands to name a few). However, it occurred to me it might be interesting to see what DJs are starting to develop a name and break into the mainstream on the island.

I’d been following an attractive looking young Thai female DJ called Sunisaa who I noticed had several weekly residencies in some pretty cool locations in Phuket and got in contact. DJ Sunisaa agreed to an interview and invited the Bowl to her sunset gig at the Pine bar inside the InterContinental Hotel Resort in Kamala Phuket.

“I’m a normal girl, however, I’m also a girl that likes to run with my passions”.

The scene was perfect, guests of the hotel were all chilling either in the pool, or by it, or venturing onto the beach just feet away for a swim in the ocean. Surfers were out in force and the waves appeared to be in their favour. All the staff were busy fulfilling guests’ orders, with snack meals, soft drinks and cocktails being particularly popular.

Due to the recent heavy rains, the DJ booth had been moved under shelter near the kitchen as a precaution, however, DJ Sunisaa looked great working her magic house grooves to suit the moment. It wasn’t long before the sun kissed the sea and bid us all farewell. I could have quite easily pulled up a sun lounger and lay down and forgotten about the world for an hour it was that chilled.
As part of the Pine bars experience, they had several Thai performers put on a fire and firework show. The talent of these performer is a sight to behold as they spin various batons and star shaped props all on fire in a synchronized formation.

As the beach entertainment came to an end, DJ Sunisaa and I found somewhere to have a chat. Born in the old Thai capital of Ayutthaya north of Bangkok, Sunisaa moved to Phuket to study at university 10 years ago. She always had a love of music and still has a dream to write and perform music as a singer. She added “I’m a normal girl, however, I’m also a girl that likes to run with my passions”. She went on to say that she knew nothing of what DJs were several years ago, but just loved the music, especially ‘Sexy vocal house’. Since discovering this genre she learnt to play and fell in love with Dj’ing.

Sunisaa has been in demand recently and her residencies include Fridays at Dee Plee by Anantara in Chern Talay, Saturdays at the Pine Bar at the InterContinental Hotel Resort in Kamala (where we met this evening), Sundays at the Miami Beach styled Zippy Day Club in Kata and finally Wednesdays at the Hugo Hub in Chern Talay. I asked her how she coped with this schedule and whether she was tired. Sunisaa replied “Yes, I’m tired, however, I love my work and the music makes me feel alive, my happiness is to be booked all the time”.
Her favorite nightclub spots on the island include the very popular ‘Café Del Mar’ beach club further along the beach in Kamala and the underground late night ‘Shelter Club’ on Bangla Road in Patong. When asked about her future plans, she told the bowl that she was happy to continue improving her skills and trying to get better more popular gigs to play. Sunisaa also has plans currently in place to open her own café bar in Phuket where DJs will be invited to play. The Bowl will be reviewing this venue for sure when it opens.
Apart from being a great DJ, I was pleasantly surprised by this young lady and I enjoyed being in her company and hearing about her passions and where she intends to take them. Without trying to sound too cliché, the Bowl suggests you watch this space!!!

Thank you to Sunisaa for talking with the Bowl and to the management and staff of the InterContinental Hotel Resort in Kamala for allowing us to film there.
